- The IBB Industry Classification System (IBBICS) of over 23,000 industries was developed using Michael Porter’s “five forces” framework for defining industries.
- All industries are analyzed using the same seven-page industry template.
- For those that believe paper towels and tissues are part of the same industry, or that database consulting and web development are part of the same industry, or that desktop computers and laptops are part of the same industry – IBB doesn’t see it that way. They are all distinct industries, and in some cases they are substitutes.
- Using the IBBICS, most companies compete in more than one industry; and the average Global 1000 company competes in approximately 30 industries. About 100 companies compete in over 200 industries.
